Bike to school (part 3)

...and part 3. Dig the banana seats and groovy wheelie about midway through this 70 second vid. Thanks, Mr. Shack, for the great promo videos and for making your school and neighborhood a better place with your Bike to School event.

Bike to school (part 2)

As promised, part 2 of 3. This video incorporates some of the footage from the "I Like Bikes" video posted a couple days ago and turns the message of that film on its head. With a little Daft Punk playing behind it, and a friendlier message, the "I Like Bikes" footage is really pretty great.

Bike to school (part 1)

This is the first of three videos produced to promote a Bike to School event in the Chicago suburbs on Oct 17. Imo, numbers two and three get progressively groovier, but this vid features some great bikes from the days when fenders and baskets were standard equipment and (*gasp*) cool.

I like bikes, but...

This is probably an inauspicious first post, as this film is awful. Funded by General Motors and released in 1978, this 13-minute anti-bike film is thinly veiled as a "share the road" educational flick for new drivers.

My problem with it is the language that is used. The message in "I Like Bikes, But..." is that bikes themselves pose a problem for drivers. By transferring responsibility for bad cycling to bikes instead of the bike drivers, the authors were effectively teaching new motorists that bikes (and therefore, bicyclists) are inherently road hazards. One should probably not expect any better from a film funded by an auto manufacturer, but this one surprised me nonetheless.

Stay tuned, though, I've got a three-parter coming soon that detourns some of the scenes from this film for the forces of good.

Riding on ice

The temperature in the Triangle dropped 48 degrees yesterday, so in honor of cooler weather, here's a video about some really cold weather cycling.

With studded tires, it's possible. Trust me on this. I college, I used to commute to class via lake.

Mountain Bike downhill

A pretty talented couple of riders tackle a not-so-easy set of trails. If you haven't paid attention to mountain biking in the last few years, you might not believe that this kind of riding is possible.

bicycle drifting

I guess the same principles as skidding are employed here -- shift your weight over the handlebars and lift the rear wheel as much as possible. Still, I had no idea this was possible on a bike.

Mountain Bike (Trials Bike) Trickster - Danny Macaskill

The only thing more impressive than a good trials video is watching trials live. That way, you see that there are no camera tricks here, no fancy editing. There are people out there who really can do this stuff.
