The cycling world has lost an amazing ambassador. I never had occasion to meet, speak to, or even email Sheldon Brown, although I have haunted some lists to which he would sometimes post. But, like many other cyclists I learned a lot from him by reading his site. His knowledge, wisdom and passion for cycling are inspiring. Thanks for everything, Sheldon.

I'd forgotten about this one until it showed up on the Commute by Bike blog last week. Sure, he's not wearing a helmet, and there may be other things that can be said to disparage the clip ("it's advertising," "it's beer," "it's good|mediochre|bad beer," etc), but there is a lot to commend in it as well. Kim, a commenter on Commute by Bike, put it really well;

"...it’s a seriously great message in a lot of ways. Look at that guy- beer gut and cheap handlebar basket, flannel and a who-cares-brand mountain bike. There’s nothing unapproachable about this.

"He’s not a granola-muching vegan or a lycra-clad triathlete on a titanium road machine. He’s not a hipster on a fixie. He’s not a kid out playing (although that’s cool, too). He looks like your neighbour. He looks like the people we want more of on bicycles. It’s so everyday and no-big-deal; it’s perfect."

This is the first of three videos produced to promote a Bike to School event in the Chicago suburbs on Oct 17. Imo, numbers two and three get progressively groovier, but this vid features some great bikes from the days when fenders and baskets were standard equipment and (*gasp*) cool.

This is probably an inauspicious first post, as this film is awful. Funded by General Motors and released in 1978, this 13-minute anti-bike film is thinly veiled as a "share the road" educational flick for new drivers.

My problem with it is the language that is used. The message in "I Like Bikes, But..." is that bikes themselves pose a problem for drivers. By transferring responsibility for bad cycling to bikes instead of the bike drivers, the authors were effectively teaching new motorists that bikes (and therefore, bicyclists) are inherently road hazards. One should probably not expect any better from a film funded by an auto manufacturer, but this one surprised me nonetheless.

Stay tuned, though, I've got a three-parter coming soon that detourns some of the scenes from this film for the forces of good.
